Post-partum can be a tough time, as much as it is a beautiful time to finally have your baby in your arms! Self-care is so important. To show your body some TLC for all that it's done!
After my second baby was born I had a stash of items both tried and true and new to me that I depended on for everything from nipple butter and shampoo to toothpaste! And with a four year gap between them I have had the time to research and sample many natural self-care skin care products for both myself and baby. I try and remind myself that our skin is our largest organ, it truly does matter what we choose to put on it! My Little guy has eczema and I'll touch on that also.
Let's start from the top with shampoo and conditioner. I have loved the Nine Naturals Pregnancy & Beyond line! The Citrus Mint Nourishing Shampoo and Conditioner smell so great and are sulfate, parabens, and phthalates free. I also love the Nine Naturals Soothing Body Wash in Citrus + Geranium. Believe me, it's like a mini spa experience in the shower!
For the no-shower days, which are far more often the the days I actually get to shower, I use Primally Pure Texturizing Dry Shampoo to extend the life of my hair style or just a quick way to soak up that unwanted oil.
*Tip: To prevent your hair from looking greasy use dry shampoo on second-day hair before the oil has a chance to reach your scalp. That way when it hits the scalp the powder is already there to soak it up!
When your hormones are all over the place because of all the changes, even toothpaste can taste gross. I wanted an all-natural whitening toothpaste & powder and came across Carbon Coco-- it's a natural 2-step teeth whitening system made with activated coconut charcoal! The spearmint-flavored toothpaste is the second step and tastes fantastic, plus a little goes a long way with these products so I'm happy about that.
My lips get chapped pretty easily in all seasons. What we put on our skin matters just as much as what we put on and in our mouths, so I reach for my Primally Pure Lip Balm all day long! The lip balm set includes four different flavors, I love the Grapefruit and Peppermint.
The most new-to-me product is one that took me a while to transition to, a natural deodorant. After trying a few different brands I have settled on Primally Pure Charcoal Deodorant and a travel-sized Earth Mama Organics Deodorant in Calming Lavender which is coconut oil based. If you've researched about switching to a natural deodorant you know there are definite changes to expect from this. The first being that you will go through a de-toxifying process when you switch from using a 'chemical' antiperspirant deodorant. What does that mean? You will actually perspire! A natural deodorant does not inhibit sweat. And unfortunately, at first this sweat might smell bad.
But after regular use and a few days (up to a week, I believe) of your body adjusting and balancing itself out, you will realize you won't sweat as much. I was realistic about expecting to actually feel when I'm sweating (since it's not an anti-perspirant)this is not for everyone, but I remind myself that this is what are body's are meant to do for us! And as long as I don't smell I can adjust to it.
Tubby Todd Freshening Spray is a life-saver for refreshing up between showers in those early days with little to no sleep and feeling so tired.
One of my favorite night time rituals is rolling on Aveda Stress Fix oil on my wrists, collar bones, and behind my ears or neck. Stopping to inhale deeply and exhale the stress of the day. It smells amazing! Now that Abram is older I sometimes apply it to the bottoms of his feet at bed time if he's particularly fussy that day.
With each of my babies I had a rough time with how painful breastfeeding was for at least the first 1-2 months, yes, that long! Each latch on was so painful and all though my nipples didn't crack or bleed, it was still excruciating. I tried several balms, oils, and ointments to help soothe and bring comfort to my nursing nipples! Here are the ones that worked for me- Earth Mama Organics Nipple Butter, smells so yummy, has a great texture and isn't sticky. Sometimes keeping it simple is the answer, a remedy that healed and soothed me was just straight 100% organic coconut oil, it's truly the best for so many things!
With a newborn come a lot of diaper changes which mean a lot of hand-washing which equals dry hands. I have to constantly moisturize. My favorite hand cream is Tubby Todd Hand Cream, it is naturally Ginger & Lime scented and has a rich consistency that is super nourishing. I keep it on my nightstand along with my lip balm, nipple butter, and oil roll-on.
For baths we like Tubby Todd Hair & Body Wash in Lavender and Rosemary. It's the best simple all-over wash and great for the whole family. It's perfect for Abram's sensitive skin and has a rich lather. Plus, I love supporting my fellow mompreneur and friend Andrea who created this line to meet her babies specific skin needs, I love that!
For between baths and ease with diapering I turn to Tubby Todd Baby Fresh Spray in Sweet Quince & Honeysuckle. This spray refreshes and I even use a couple sprays on his bottom to help with wiping up those icky, messy number twos! The whole Tubby Todd bath line is amazing.
I realized that I left out a diaper rash ointment from the picture. I use several different ones but the best for us have been Honest Diaper Rash Cream and all though I don't believe this one is all-natural, Boudreaux's Butt Paste Diaper Rash Ointment in Maximum Strength got us through some pretty bad newborn diaper rashes that were not going away after trying mostly everything else. They also offer a natural ingredients version of the ointment that is paraben and preservative-free but I haven't tried that one.
Bed time is our favorite, we unwind and take the moment to nurture and bond, I love it! I have used Honest Organic Breathe Easy Rub on both of my boys since the age of 3 months. I massage it onto the soles of their feet every night as part of our routine. It smells amazing and is so relaxing, it practically puts them to sleep! It's great on their chest/neck and back for when they're stuffed up.
For Abram's Eczema:
I found essential products that finally helped with his dry skin-- Aveeno Baby EczemaTherapy Nighttime Balm, CeraVe Baby Moisturizing Lotion, and Live Clean Baby Gentle Moisture Lotion, which if 97% plant-based.
For specific spots that tend to get wiped more often through out the day and need special attention, like his face and hands-- I use Primally Pure's Baby Balm, a rich balm with so many wonderful, natural key ingredients that help heal irritated skin. Earth Mama Organics Baby Face Nose & Chin Balm is great to protect drooly chins from teething and prevent chapping.
I hope this line up of natural skin care products for mom and baby are helpful to you! You're doing an awesome job, Mama! Now go treat yourself to a luxurious bath, you deserve it.
